Culinary Uses For Dandelions

Did we say dandelion recipes? Yes indeed!

There seems to be a recipe for everything from 'soup to nuts' as the saying goes. Well maybe not nuts, but definitely dandelion soup.

While most of us think of the dandelion as a nastly enemy in our lawn, there are some amazing uses for dandelions as well.

One of the benefits of dandelion plants is using them as a valuable, free, food source in a variety of ways in the kitchen.

Gathering Tips

There are a couple of important tips to keep in mind when you go foraging in preparation for your dandelion cooking experience.

Always harvest your dandelions from areas that you are certain to be free of chemicals.

When picking the flowers for cooking, snip them above the stem to avoid the very bitter milk that's in the stem.

It's thought that the best time to gather dandelions is on a sunny afternoon. This ensures the flowers will be open and they will be dry and fluffy.

Choose the deep yellow flowers and not the small buds which will make your recipe bitter. Avoid the white, fluffy, seed heads altogether.

The entire plant is good for eating, not just the flower. It's important to wash all parts thoroughly before you begin the culinary work.
