Fungal Diseases On My Lawn?
Improper care breeds lawn diseases that are actually caused by fungal diseases in your soil. Just exactly what kind of improper care are we talking about here?
First, lets have a quick look at the disease causing pathogens.
What Causes Soil Fungi?
All turf grass diseases are caused by soil fungi. The disease producing organisms - known as pathogens - are held in check by good fungi and other microorganisms, for the most part.
It's when the pathogens find favorable conditions to thrive in that they get the upper hand and problems start. Sorry to say, but this is usually due to improper care on your part.
That's hard to hear when you've already worked hard all year long to have a lush, healthy, green lawn. Now that summer is here, the hot humid daytime followed by cool night temperatures results in lingering dew into mid morning hours. This can be a breeding ground for lawn fungal diseases.
When You've Got Turf Grass Diseases, Prevention Is The Best Remedy
Fungal diseases are easier to prevent that they are to cure. You can control lawn disease with a good natural fungicide, if you work at it.
But it's probably best to get an understanding of the conditions that give rise to the problem, so you can correct them. This in turn will mean the diseases won't get started in the first place.
The Possible Cause of Turf Grass Diseases
improper watering
soil compaction
wrong grass seed planted
wrong amount or type of fertilizer applied
Lawn Disease Control
Learn proper lawn watering practices, such as early in the morning, and have a healthy, fungus free lawn.
A lawn aeration will open up the roots to air and it's a great time to follow up with some compost top dressing which will retard disease development.
Choose the right grass seed for your climate, which will have a better survival rate. Poorly adapted grass is likely to be weaker and therefore more vulnerable to diseases.
Choose and apply the right amount and type of fertilizer at the right times. Use slow release, organic fertilizer, to encourage slow, steady growth, rather than sudden growth spurts, because succulent, fast growing turf grass is an easy target for disease organisms.
Consider a lawn dethatching to remove a thick layer of build up that can also lead to diseased turf.
